SITREP
Microsoft
Vista
killed my computer, and that's why I haven't posted for so
long. Post hoc ergo prompter hoc perhaps, but
here's the sequence of events. 1. Vista installed (30
January). 2. Computer stops working. 3. Intensive
telephonic consultations with Microsoft. 4. Video card
replaced. 5. Further intensive telephonic consultations
with Microsoft. 6. Microsoft washes hands of problem and
me. 7. Intensive in-store consultations with $75-hour
technician. 8. Technician declares computer well fucked.
9. Forced purchase of new computer with XP operating
system (24 February). 10. Arduous task of collecting and
reinstalling programs and merging collected data from
previous installations begun (in progress).
All
knowledge is a blessing, as they say, so here's what I've
learned. 1. Don't buy eMachines
computers. 2. Don't waste time
consulting with Microsoft "Level 1" technicians.
3. Don't believe any ATI
claims regarding Vista compatibility. 4. Don't install any
Microsoft operating system until at least two years after
release. (Number 4 was related to me by a Microsoft
"Level 2" technician.)
Oh,
and I got an article out of it. More to the point, Jeremy
Lott held a gun to my head until I wrote
one, about computers and their feminine wiles. I've been
promised publication, and I'll link to it when it appears.
For
the handful of visitors that come to this sight not
looking for pictures of Diana Rigg, Stephen Harper and
Erica Ehm, regular posting will resume presently. Assuming
I haven't buggered my installation of FrontPage 2003, in
which case you won't even see this. In the meantime,
here's a riddle (after Churchill).
Q:
Why is Katie Hawthorne like the Germans?
A: Because she's either at your throat or in your
lap.

Hawthorne:
There once was a girl with a strawberry curl...

[KMG,
15 March 2007: Oh course it wasn't that simple.
Repeated attempts to update to my host failed. A couple of
days later I was informed that my host does not tolerate
FrontPage 2003. A few days after that a despairing late
night search of my cupboards revealed, mirabile dictu,
a full copy of FrontPage 98 and an update copy of
FrontPage 2000. And a few days after that I finally ginned
up the courage to send my new site to Edmonton, from where it
is made available to you.]
